A continuity, a transformation

The diploma was born in 2021 with an unprecedented feature in the Spanish-speaking world: it was coordinated entirely from inside a maximum-security prison unit. This is its fifth cohort, with four editions previously completed (2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025) and thousands of registered students from 25 countries across Latin America and Europe.

This diploma continues the work started in the 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025 editions, which consolidated a diverse community of knowledge: people in prison, judicial operators, prison staff, teachers, researchers, victims, released people, families and the general community.

The 2026 edition focuses on security based on restorative justice, social integration and collective care, challenging punitive models that perpetuate exclusion. It seeks to deconstruct narratives of enmity and to promote otherness as a reflection of our shared humanity.

Cross-cuttingly, emphasis is placed on the gender perspective and the inclusion of LGBTIQ+ people in the design of citizen security policies and practices.

General objectives

Who is it for?

No need to prove prior studies.

  • People in prison and released people
  • Victims of various crimes
  • Affected families and communities
  • Prison staff
  • Professionals in law, mental health, social work, criminology
  • Teachers, researchers and students
  • General community interested in the topic

Certification

University Extension Diploma issued by the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata, through the Secretaría de Extensión of the Facultad de Trabajo Social y Ciencias de la Salud. General coordination is in charge of Universidad Liberté.

Requirement: 75% attendance at synchronous meetings and submission of practical work.

6 thematic pillars

The gender perspective runs across all the pillars.

01

Restorative Justice Cross-cutting

A path different from punishment, which seeks to repair harm and rebuild bonds. Dialogue, recognition, responsibility and care for those who suffered. Victims, people who caused harm and the community have an active role.

02

Gender Cross-cutting

Face gender inequalities head-on, inside and outside prison. Citizen security policies with a gender perspective that focus on the care of women and LGBTIQ+ people: motherhood, sexual and reproductive health, housing conditions. Empathy, respect and equity.

03

Mental Health and Family

Confinement devastates subjectivity and with it dismantles family ties, partners, sons and daughters, friendships. Under the logic of emotional care, the rebuilding of the wounded social bond and the hope of a transformed future, mental health is proposed as a fundamental right for the recovery of people in prison.

04

Work and Self-Management

Work in confinement should not be punishment or exploitation. Cooperative self-management, popular economy, food sovereignty. Looking at experiences such as Cooperativa Liberté.

05

Education

Education in prison is neither a prize nor a temporary way out: it is a right, a commitment to oneself, a window to the world. Thinking, creating, transforming. Art, health care, work and reflection as parts of a meaningful life project.

06

Sentence Execution

Review how sentences are served from a human rights perspective. Alternatives that do not break ties or deepen exclusion. Long sentences, access to rights, victim participation in restorative processes.

What you want to know before signing up

Is there any cost?
It has no cost for you: it is 100% subsidized. The diploma does have a real cost (teaching, platform, organization), but it is fully covered by the Comunidad Liberté: the work of the teaching team and the contributions of those who support the project. If you want to join that community, you can be a supporter at universidadliberte.org/donar.
Do I need prior studies?
No. The diploma is open to everyone with no need to prove formal studies. What we ask is interest, commitment and availability for the synchronous meetings.
How exactly is the course structured?
The course runs in two combined modalities:
  • One live class per month — the last Saturday of each month, from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM (Argentina time) on Zoom. There are 7 synchronous meetings in total, from June 27 to December 5, 2026.
  • Weekly practical activity by email — each week you receive the material and the assignment to submit on the Virtual Campus.
Total: 108 clock hours of study over 6 months.
I already did previous cohorts. Can I take it again?
Yes, we're waiting for you! Each edition we renew the topics, add new teachers, and deepen the pillars based on what we learned in previous years. People who already attended 2021, 2022, 2023 or 2025 come with different questions — and that enriches the whole cohort. The diploma is a collective process, not a fixed content: it changes with those who go through it. Sign up with the same ID document and it goes in your Instituto history.
What do I need to attend?
Internet access and Zoom for the monthly meetings. If you are in a prison facility in the Province of Buenos Aires where Liberté has a presence, we coordinate access via FM radio and the University Student Centers.
What's required to get certified?
Attend at least 75% of the synchronous meetings (at least 6 of the 7 monthly meetings) and submit the practical activities. Attendance is validated with your ID document from the Liberté certificate portal. The University Extension Diploma is issued by the Universidad Nacional de Mar del Plata — Facultad de Trabajo Social y Ciencias de la Salud (Secretaría de Extensión).
Are spots limited?
There are 1,000 spots with the option to expand based on demand. We recommend signing up as soon as possible to secure your spot and receive all notices.
Can I develop a project in my territory?
Yes, it's optional. Those who wish can develop a project in their community applying what they've learned, in coordination with local organizations. The Liberté team accompanies that process.
How will you contact me after I sign up?
A confirmation email arrives instantly with all the details. A few days before the start we write again with the Zoom link and Campus access. If you don't hear from us before June 20, write to us at formacion@universidadliberte.org.

Did you already attend a previous edition?

We're waiting for you again. Each year we renew content, add new teachers, and deepen the pillars with what we've learned. Those who already went through the diploma in 2021, 2022, 2023 or 2025 come with different questions — and that enriches the whole cohort. Sign up with the same ID document and it goes in your Instituto history.

Building security is building care

Peace is not held by higher walls: it is held by stronger ties, by a community that decides to care for itself.
